How To Live A Life Committed To Freedom

How To Live A Life Committed To Freedom

The definition of commitment in my Collins Dictionary reads "…restriction of freedom".

For many working mums, the biggest challenge is balancing commitment with personal freedom. They question how they can be a committed mother, entrepreneur, partner and individual while honouring a desire for freedom?  Freedom to work whenever and wherever you please; freedom from health ailments; freedom to make financial choices based on your heart not your bank balance.

So I consulted with a number of experts to explore this quandary and ascertain whether the trend to avoid pursing freedom is based on levels of commitment.  And we identified 4 key questions to ask yourself …

       1. What am I committed to?

Being honest about what’s going on in you life, the good, the bad and the ugly reveals   exactly what you’re committed to. Outcomes don’t lie. Here are a few examples:

    •     The Good – If I’m committed to self-development then I attend life-changing seminars and engage a success coach.

    •     The Bad – If I haven’t developed a strategic plan to kick start my business idea, I’m committed to failure.

    •     The Ugly – If I don’t engage in a regular fitness regime I’m committed to ill health.

       2. Does commitment to building my business mean sacrificing my freedom?

Yes.

It does, if you’re trading hours for dollars, which is how the majority of the world’s population works. Going to work everyday, whether for yourself or another, and performing tasks for financial reward means you’re not free to spend your time as you choose. True freedom comes from being committed  to building a business that operates without you. When you’re not tied to a job or a business, you’re experiencing true freedom.

       3.  If I’m committed to something does this mean it will last forever?

No.

Commitment has nothing to do with time.  You can only commit to things within your control and you cannot control time.  People pledge their commitment with comments like "I’m here aren’t I so I’m committed."  That’s not commitment. The way to ensure quality relationships and successful businesses is to commit to treating people with respect and appreciation. Not promising you’ll be in their life forever.

        4. How can I stay committed to happiness when I’m feeling angry?

By their fickle nature you have little control over your feelings. Feelings whether anger,   sadness, regret, happiness or joyfulness can descend at any moment almost with a life of their own. What you can control is your reactions to those feelings.

Saying "I feel upset at the moment and need a reassuring hug" shows a commitment to honest communication.

As you take a close look at all the areas of your life, you’ll begin to craft a clear picture of what you’re truly committed to.  And in doing so you’ll  identify any disconnects, the things you say or believe you’re committed to versus the truth of what’s happening in your life.  Once you become clear on your commitments and make the necessary adjustments to honour them, you embark on the pathway to freedom.
