Are You Being Honest About Your Commitments?

Your life mirrors your commitments. Being honest about what’s really going on in your business and your life (the good, the bad and the ugly) will reveal exactly what you’re committed to. If you’re committed to a goal of having caring, nurturing and loving relationships, that’s what you’ll experience. If you’re committed to following your passion, your day will be spent doing work you love. If you experience conflict within your team, it’s because you’re committed to it. Yes…even if it seems as though it’s another person’s fault.

Outcomes don’t lie.

If you say you’re committed to being fit…then you’ll honour your daily fitness regime, no matter how busy your routine.

If financial freedom is a priority…you’ll make the switch from trading your hours for dollars to setting goals which focus on creating passive and residual income.

If a loving relationship with your partner is important…then the harmony in your household will reveal the truth.

When you make a commitment to your goals, you experience true freedom. You no longer have to wrestle with the decision about how to spend your day or which priorities to set. If you make a 100% commitment to answer emails within 24 hours…then that’s it. The decision is made. You don’t have to think about it again. Life becomes easier and simpler. Your commitment keeps you focused and frees up energy that would otherwise be wasted grappling with internal debates…should I…shouldn’t I…I’ll do it tomorrow. When the commitment has been made, you then have energy to pursue your creative achievements.

The first step to making an honest commitment is to set your honest goals. Goals are proven success tools. They give you big visions to work towards whether for your life, relationships, health or business. Goals give you focus on what’s important.

Goals must be:

1. Specific

Jack Canfield (co-creator of Chicken Soup for the Soul) says “…vague goals produce vague results”. Goals need to be emotive and inspiring. They should illicit some physical response, giddiness, nausea or a desire to run around the block.

2. Succinct

While the specific details are important for your vision, short and snappy goals (5 words) are easier for the brain to keep locked into the conscious mind. The more specific and accurate your goal, the more you will achieve.

3. Challenging

Big goals ensure growing into a big person. Take the measure by thinking of the most amazing thing you want to achieve. Then allow yourself to be engulfed by the excitement and nervousness of the challenge, then go for it. Don’t worry about the how…that comes later.

4. Measurable

Goals must have some measure of success otherwise they are just ideas. Identify the criteria by which you’ll measure your goal’s progress…how much?…how many? It’s a good idea “to get fit”…it’s a goal to “to compete in next year’s triathlon”. However to be inspired to achieve your goal measurability needs to be coupled with vision.

5. Visible

Goals must be written down otherwise they get lost amongst all the mental chatter. Place them in a prominent location (computer screen saver, fridge, bedside table) but move them around frequently. Otherwise the familiarity diminishes impact. The ritual of reading them out morning and night has insurmountable power.

6. Timely

You must identify a timeframe by which to accomplish your goal. This will put its priority into perspective. For example, “to complete a creative project”, is once again a good idea. However it’s an inspiring goal to “Unveil my first art exhibition by December”.

7. Feeling

The key component to achieving your goals is to ‘FEEL’ they have already manifested. Live your life as if they have already been achieved. In fact, it’s when you’re on the journey to achieving your goals that the feeling of already having achieved them is vitally important. There’s no room for doubt and mistrust. Feel it and live it.

8. Stretching

The path to achieving your goals requires some serious stretching. Stretching hurts a little at first but starts to feel good the longer the stretch. Every day commit to stretching yourself a little further…and with each stretch your goals come a little closer.

9. Take Action

No matter how exciting your goals, without action they won’t come to life. To get you started identify 3 areas in your business that you want to focus on during the next 6 months. Remembner your goals should be challenging (so you remain interested) and achievable (within the time frame).

For each focus area write a simple heading and try to describe a ‘measurable’ result – how you will know you have succeeded or are on track. These measurable results will become your strategic actions. For example:

Heading: Be more productive

Measurable Results: I have a system to follow up on calls and emails, I’m on time (or early) for my business meetings, I get 90% of my tasks accomplished, I completed project xyz.

Goal: Triple turnover while working 50% less

Now that’s a goal worth committing to.

It’s About Nurturing NOT Networking – 9 Golden Rules

Nurturing relationships is the true essence of a strong, supportive and sustainable business. You can attend all the business networking functions in your area, collect hundreds of cards and yet be doing very little to connect deeply with likeminded entrepreneurs.

When you nurture relationships by taking a personal, authentic interest in someone’s life you’re creating potential life-long friendships. It’s these relationships that are an asset to your business, not your huge collection of business cards.

In addition, nurturing relationships is one of the most cost-effective business building strategies available to you.

Why? Because it costs nothing to share your challenges and triumphs, or to ask about another’s industry or occupation. Yet by showing your interest and concerns, you’ll be making a connection that could prove immensely valuable to your business in the future.

Success is not a solo project. It needs to be shared. Working together with others you’ll accomplish far more than working separately. The success of our business lies in this ability to surround yourself with the right support. And when you do, you become energised, encouraged and empowered.

Below are 9 golden rules for nurturing relationships whether online or in person:

1. Act like the host

Act like the host – not the guest – at every event you attend.

2. Don’t sell

Instead communicate and build trust. People purchase from people they know, like and trust. When you focus on nurture relationships rather than selling, you’re investing in the long-term wellbeing of your business.

3. Make heart-to-heart connections

Achieve this by being 100% present in the moment and focusing totally on the other person.

4. Connecting with others is something you LIVE, not something you DO

Realize that wherever you go, the people you meet could potentially hire you, buy your product, or recommend you to someone who will. Your whole self needs to be alert to nurturing relationships, at all times.

5. Don’t dance (only) with the one who brought you

It can be more fun to go to an event if you already know someone there, no question. If you need to ask a friend to go with you in order to get your own enthusiasm up, then by all means do so. But once you’re there, you and your friend should split up for at least half the time and both connect separately. Later you’ll be able to introduce each other to your new friends, giving you both double the benefit of attending the event.

6. Give without expectation

Give without remembering and receive without forgetting. The Law of Reciprocity states that “what you give out you get back ten-fold” so nurture relationships from a place of giving rather than wondering what you’ll get out of it.

7. Adopt an abundance mentality

When you meet someone amazing, introduce them to someone else. There is never any need to hoard the relationship for yourself, there’s plenty for everyone.

8. Learn to be a good conversationalist

These skills will serve you well in your personal life as well as business events, and in both formal and informal situations. Guidelines for conversation skills include:

Give people you meet a subtle experience of your value

You want people to think, “Wow, those two minutes with [you] were great; I want to spend more time with her!”

Gently clarify what they say

Give them the experience of being clearer about what they are thinking as a result of talking with you.

Be real, but not too deep

Be delicate and appropriate – you don’t have permission to go in deep here.

Lead your conversation partner to ask about you

It’s always better if you can encourage real interest in your side of the story – rather than just launching into a monologue about your products and services.

Give people basic information so they want more

Don’t try to explain everything about your company. Just whet their appetite and see if the interest is there. If there is, then give them the opportunity to catch up with you again.

9. Hand out your card in Third Person

An example: “Here’s my card. If you know of anyone who would need…” Talking about this hypothetical other person takes the pressure off your new contact, ensuring they don’t feel like they are being sold to or are obligated to buy from you.

10. Follow-up

Make the most out of every event you attend by taking the time to follow up once you’re back in the office. Send an email to your new contacts. Better still give them a call. Topics for the follow-up include:

Remind them of a personal detail that you remember about them
“We have this great resource and I thought of you; have you ever heard of …”
Invite them to visit your website, shop or restaurant
Offer to give them something for free
Introduce an affiliate opportunity
Refer them to someone else they may find interesting

Remember nurturing long-term business relationships is NOT about selling, so first connect from the heart then use your judgement to see where to take the next step.

Stop Being a Martyr And Start Being Successful

For so many years I wore my “I can do it all” martyrdom philosophy as a badge. And nowhere was that more evident than at home. As the primary carer and sole provider of my young daughters for so many years I literally burnt out trying to do EVERYTHING on my own. My body gave way and I spent three months incapacitated with a herniated disk. Despite the pain it was the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate my life.

The challenge was, as a single mother with limited income where was I going to get the help. As always, our amazing universe provides the answers…but only when we’re listening.

I heard about an aupair agency that offered Japanese girls room and board in exchange for 20 hours of their time. With three people already living in a small three bedroom apartment, space for a fourth person was limited.

Deciding to give it a shot we agreed to house a delightful Japanese girl for three months. The girls and I set about converting the garage into a living space. With some fabric to cover the roller-door mechanics, cushions and love we transformed the drab area into a bedroom.

Kanako was a delight. Maiko was divine. And each of our Japanese, German, Korean and now Canadian aupairs have been wonderful ‘big sisters’ to the girls.
